Can’t control Apple TV - light blinks 3 times

I can’t use Smart Remote to control my Apple TV 4 (Model A1842). After adding the Applt TV as a new device, pressing any button on Smart Remote makes the light on the front of the Apple TV blink 3 times, and nothing else happens. 

I have tried testing remote codes (pressing power causes the same three blinks) and adding devices by model number. Nothing works, and I am very disappointed. This has been an issue for more than two months with no resolution.

  • Hi David, quite strange that it doesnt work. I'm using Sevenhugs remote just fine with my aTV 4. I added the device and it worked immediately.

  • I know I’m not the only one with this issue — others reported it during the beta as well. I wish Sevenhugs would provide guidance to address the issue, because as things stand the Smart Remote is useless to me.

    • Alex T that’s an extreme course of action: by resetting the Apple TV we’ll lose all our installed apps, provider logins, etc. That’s hours of work to fix. 

      Also, it suggests unpairing the Apple Remote — does this mean we will no longer be able to use the Apple Remote along with the Smart Remote? The Apple Remote touchpad functionality isn’t replicated on the Smart Remote. 

      Is it possible to unpair the Apple Remote without having to factory reset the Apple TV 4K?

    • Alex T I did reset my Apple TV. I tried unpairing the Siri Remote to see if that was the issue and it wouldn’t let me re-pair the same remote, so there definitely was some problem with the Apple TV. The factory reset did solve the problem and I can now control my Apple TV with Smart Remote. 

      (For anyone else in the same boat: Apple TV did remember and reinstall all my apps after the reset, but I did have to sign into all my providers again. Took about 30 minutes to get things back to how they were before.)

  • I can say the same thing as Wout Martens ... no issues with the standard controls, neither with generic "Apple TV" profile (the one withouth any model number in the INFO section) nor the Apple TV 4 profile (model APPLETV4, I don't know if they are the same but I had them both installed at some point).

    The only problem I noticed (I was looking for it on the forum when I stumbled upon this thread) is that it looks like there's no way to turn off the Apple TV. The device button on the top carousel doesn't work and the long press on the button that is used to make the "go to sleep" overlay appear on the standard remote doesn't either (I get the haptic feedback but nothing happens).

      I have backed a lot of project on Kickstarter and Indiegogo and I'm not afraid to say that this remote is easily one of the best in terms of out-of-the-box functionality and promises kept.

      I really can't believe how well it works with almost everything I got in my house and with close to zero effort on my part.

      Of course it's not perfect yet. Of course there's room for improvement. There always is.

      Issues like the one reported by David have to be addressed and fixed, hopefully not by resetting a device to its factory settings!

      But I totally get that something that is expected to work right away with tons of different devices require an high degree of patience and, for what I've seen on these pages since I got it, it looks you're really committed to make it better.

      That's more that what can be said for many commercial products!
